LAW MINISTER CALLS FOR FORMULATION OF SUBCOMMITTEE TO HELP THE PREVENTION OF ELECTRONIC CRIMES.

A meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 was held at the Ministry of Law and Justice on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Dr. Muhammad Farogh Naseem. Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Mr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui and Minister of State for Interior, Mr. Shehryar Afridi and were also present during the meeting.
Issues ranging from blocking of objectionable content to working of a Forensic Agency in collaboration with the Security Agencies came under discussion.
Law Minister, Dr. Farogh Naseem told the participants there is no hitch in the Law to establish multiple Investigating Agencies to look into cyber crimes and their prevention. Mr. Shehryar Afridi called for capacity building of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and National Response Centre for Cyber Crime.
Dr.Farogh Naseem also emphasized the need for a consensus among all the stakeholders in order to deal with the electronic crimes. For such purpose, the Law Minister constituted a sub-committee comprising ISI, MI, IB, FIA and PTA to urgently formulate recommendations to deal with all type of issues and to suggest amendments in law, rules and SOPs. The Law Minister also said that the Committee consisting of all the agencies may give its technical input from time to time so that all the stakeholders are on the same page when need arises. He further said our agencies must be at par with their international counterparts when it comes to their capabilities in dealing with the electronic crimes.
Farogh Naseem came up with a new concept of capacity building, which was that a meaningful capacity building of the regular authorities be done with the capacity building of ISI and MI as ISI and MI were the backbone of our country’s security paradigm.
It was decided that another meeting will be convened on the issue and the working paper will be presented in the meeting.
Parliamentary Secretary for Law, Ms. Maleeka Bokhari was also present during the meeting.
