For my return to the country, I required three things, I may be allowed to take part in the election, my name not put on Exit Control List (ECL) and I may not be arrested. For these three reasons, I decided to remain out of country, General Musharraf said. Dr Muhammad Amjad as Chairman of the party and Mehreen Malik Adam as General Secretary are the most appropriate persons he also said. Party workers should support the two and I will support them as well, he added. He said that he was quite committed and keen to take part in the general elections of 2018 but there were some hurdles that did not removed. After consultation with the APML leadership, I decided not to return the country for the time being, Musharraf said. To his party candidates, Musharraf said that they should go to the election with full zeal and I will support them. Good times will come and we will then decide accordingly, he also said. For my resignation as party chairman, certain rumors were circulating and the reason I felt that I should personally explain in this regard. He said that he was very much committed for his return to the country, face court cases and take part in the election. In the way to fulfillment of his desire there were certain impediments that did not remove. First, that I should have been allowed to take part in the elections. Islamabad High Court (IHC) had issued decision regarding disqualification of Khawaja Asif that was nullified by the Supreme Court. I was also disqualified by a high court bench to contest the elections but Supreme Court did not nullify the same decision like it did in Khawaja Asif case. Second, my name should not be put on Exit Control List (ECL). Name of Mian Nawaz Sharif has not been put on ECL and off and on, he is travelling to London and addressing public all over in the country. I also required that liberty. Third, that I may not be arrested after my return to the country. Supreme Court had said that I would not be arrested till I reach the court. The apex court however did not clarify that if I would not be arrested after that. These three issues were impeding my way back to the country. If my movements may be restricted upon my return to the country, what I could have done for my party. With due consultation with the party leadership, I decided not to return the country as this is not an appropriate time and it could create difficulties for the party as well, General Musharraf said.
Some people are saying that I have left the politics which is a total misconception. I would move forward at an appropriate time. I thought that before court declare me ineligible for the party chairmanship, I should resign beforehand. General Musharraf has urged APML workers to get united under the leadership of Dr Amjad and Mehreen Malik Adam leaving aside their petty disputes and differences. Party workers should participate in the elections with full zeal & zest. They will be having my full support. At an appropriate time, I will once again become party chairman, he also said.
