Defense Production ministry and its allied institutions have done commendable job in developing Pakistan’s defense production potential and made this country not only a missile but a nuclear power said Senator Lt. Gen.Retd Abdul Qayyum while chairing meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Defense Production at the Parliament House on Monday. A comprehensive briefing was given by the Ministry of Defense Production highlighting progress made by all its institutions.
After detailed deliberation and comprehensive interaction with all the representatives and heads of defense production institutions the Committee gave following directions:-
a All autonomous boards must enjoy full powers granted to them under prevalent laws.
b Members of the respective boards should be selected on merit.
c Research and development of each institution should be staffed with competent professionals with sufficient funds to excel in their R&D pursuits.
d There is need for effect6ive coordination among the defense production institutions and also with private sector vendors.
e Institutions like Pakistan Machine Tool Factory and precision engineering need to be grouped under defense production division to enhance their efficiency.
f DEPO is doing a commendable job. However, they need to focus more on marketing and also should pursue all MOUs signed with various international firms in previous IDEAs upto 2016 and full preparation needs to be made for IDEAs 2018 being held from 27 to 29 November, 2018.
g All Defense Production Institutions should be so productive that they should boosts Pakistan defense exports to enable themselves to become financially self-sustaining and to release financial pressure on the national budget.
h Work on Gwadar Shipyard construction should be expedited and a report on the progress should be put up in every subsequent meeting.
The meeting was held under the Chairmanship of Senator Lt. Gen. (R) Abdul Qayyum here at the Parliament House on Monday and was attended among others by Senator Nauman Wazir Khattak, Acting Secretary Defence Production Maj. Gen. Ali Awan, Maj. Gen. Moazzam Goraya, Air Vice Marshal Naveed Tariq, Air Commodore Shams ul Haq, Brig. Taufeeq, Colonel Mazhar, Commodore Daniyal, Brig. Mumtaz, and Joint Secretary Ali Malik.
